A practical guide to picking your first electric scooter: range, motor power, tires, weight, and safety features that actually matter.

Buying your first electric scooter is easy to get wrong in one of two directions: overspend on features you'll never use, or save fifty euros on a scooter that can't actually handle your commute. Most of the confusion clears up once you stop comparing spec sheets and start with three questions: how far do you actually need to go, where will you ride, and where will you keep it.

Start with your real commute, not the marketing range

Every listing advertises a maximum range, and almost none of them are honest about the conditions. That number usually comes from a rider under 75 kg, on flat ground, at a steady 15-20 km/h, with a fully charged battery and mild weather. Add a hill, a heavier rider, cold weather, or a headwind, and real-world range typically drops by 20-35%.

The fix is simple: take your actual round-trip distance and double it before comparing to the advertised range. A scooter rated for 30 km should comfortably cover a 15 km daily round trip with battery to spare, rather than arriving home on fumes. If you're commuting more than 10 km one-way, look specifically at scooters in the 45-60 km advertised range, not the budget 20-25 km models aimed at short last-mile trips.

Motor power decides whether hills are a problem

A 250W motor is enough for flat city streets and light riders, but it will struggle noticeably on anything steeper than a gentle slope, especially with a rider over 80 kg. For mixed terrain or hillier routes, 350-500W is a more realistic minimum, and dual-motor scooters (two motors, often 2x350W or 2x500W) handle inclines and quick acceleration far better, at the cost of extra weight and shorter range per charge.

If you don't know your commute's elevation, check it once on a maps app before shopping. A single steep block ridden daily is enough reason to size up a motor tier.

Tires: comfort and puncture risk trade off directly

  • Solid (airless) tires never go flat and need no maintenance, but transmit every crack and pothole straight into your wrists. Best for smooth pavement and riders who don't want to think about tire pressure.
  • Pneumatic (air-filled) tires absorb bumps far better and grip wet roads more safely, but can puncture and need occasional pressure checks. Best for anyone riding on real streets rather than polished plazas.
  • Self-healing or gel-filled tires split the difference — most punctures seal themselves, ride quality is close to pneumatic — but they cost more and are heavier.

If your route includes potholes, gravel, or wet cobblestones, pneumatic or self-healing tires are worth the extra maintenance thought. Solid tires make sense mainly for short, smooth, urban hops.

Weight is the spec people underestimate

A scooter that rides beautifully becomes a burden the moment you have to carry it up a flight of stairs or onto a train. Scooters under 14 kg are genuinely easy to lift with one hand; the 15-19 kg range is manageable but noticeably heavier to carry any real distance; anything over 20 kg is best thought of as something you roll, not something you carry, unless it folds down with wheels for dragging.

If your trip involves stairs, public transport, or storing the scooter somewhere you have to lift it into (a car trunk, a shelf, an overhead rack), weight should outrank top speed and range in your priority list.

Safety features worth checking before you buy

  • Dual braking (electronic + a mechanical disc or drum brake) stops meaningfully faster and more predictably than a single electronic brake, especially in wet conditions.
  • Front and rear lights that are actually bright, not just a small indicator LED — you want to be seen at night, not just see the road.
  • IP rating of at least IPX4 if you'll ever ride in rain — this covers splashing water, which is the realistic worst case for most commuters (full submersion ratings like IPX7 matter much less than people assume for street use).
  • A visible speedometer and battery percentage, not just a vague battery icon — knowing your actual charge helps you avoid getting stranded.

Warranty and after-sales support matter more than an extra spec

Electric scooters have moving, weather-exposed parts — brakes, tires, a battery that degrades over time — and the difference between brands is often less about top speed and more about what happens when something breaks. A one-year warranty that covers the battery specifically (not just "the scooter") is worth more than a longer warranty with vague wording. Check whether spare parts (tires, brake pads, the charger) are actually sold separately by the brand or its local distributor; a scooter with no local parts supply can turn a small repair into a multi-week wait for a part shipped from overseas.

It's also worth a quick search for how the brand handles battery replacement specifically, since that's the part most likely to need attention after a year or two of daily use. A battery that can be swapped by the owner is generally cheaper to maintain long-term than one that requires sending the whole scooter back to a service center.

Test ride before you fully commit, if you can

Specs tell you what a scooter can do in theory; five minutes of riding tells you whether it actually suits you. Deck size matters more in person than on paper — a narrow deck that looks fine in a photo can feel cramped if you have larger feet or like to shift your stance while riding. Handlebar height matters too, especially for taller riders, since not every model has adjustable stems.

If a local shop or a friend already owns the model you're considering, a short test ride will tell you more about ride comfort and brake feel than another hour of reading reviews. If a test ride isn't realistic, favor brands with a genuine return window over ones that only offer store credit or a restocking-fee return.

A few numbers to sanity-check before buying

  • Daily round trip under 10 km: a 250-350W motor and 25-35 km advertised range is usually enough.
  • Daily round trip 10-20 km: look at 350-500W and 40-60 km advertised range.
  • Carrying it up stairs or onto transit regularly: prioritize sub-16 kg models even if it means less range.
  • Riding in rain or on rough pavement: pneumatic or self-healing tires, plus an IPX4-rated deck.

None of these numbers are hard rules — a confident, experienced rider can get more out of a smaller scooter than a nervous beginner gets out of a big one. But they're a reasonable starting filter before you get lost comparing twenty listings that all claim to be "the best value." Buy for the commute you actually have, not the one you might have someday, and upgrade later if your needs genuinely change.
